This smart little hnefatafl game is the perfect one to take on the road with you. It's light and takes up little space in a bag, and it looks good too. Set out on a table in a cafe or bar, it will attract the attention of onlookers, especially those who've never seen hnefatafl before. And it's an inexpensive way to play some of the best hnefatafl games: tablut, tawlbwrdd and sea battle tafl.

The board is made of birch plywood and measures 8 inches square (200mm). The pattern is burnt into the wood using the pokerwork technique, and is kept neat and simple: just the central square and the four corners are marked, allowing a number of different hnefatafl games to be played without undue confusion. Three-quarter-inch squares (19mm) are used.

The pieces are of glass: a jet black king, eight blood-red defenders and sixteen icy white attackers are supplied. These slide along the glassy surface of the board, which has been coated with lacquer. A drawstring bag is supplied to hold the pieces.

The 8-page booklet supplied with the game contains the rules for three different versions of hnefatafl: tablut, tawlbwrdd and sea battle tafl. It also contains a brief history of the game, and points the player to sources of further information.

The game comes with the after-sales service you expect from The Hnefatafl Shop. Before and after the sale, you'll find here a passion for the game: strategic tips and alternative rules for the board on the web site, and a readiness to answer any questions about history, rules and strategy that you may have.

This game is hand-made in a rustic style. Please do not expect machine-made precision; there may therefore be minor blemishes in the work. Not suitable for young children due to small pieces.
