Hnefatafl: the Game of the Vikings

English National Hnefatafl Championships

Sunday, 4th August 2013

With the World Hnefatafl Championships at Fetlar having just been held, it seems like August is Hnefatafl month in the UK. The 2013 English National Hnefatafl Championships will be held at Sutton Hoo in two weeks. Sponsored by Ealdfaeder Anglo Saxons and the National Trust, the event will be held over the weekend of 17th and 18th August, with the championship itself taking place on the Sunday.

There have been on-line tournaments for many years, but face-to-face tournaments for Hnefatafl became popular after 2008 when the first World Hnefatafl Championship was held at Fetlar in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. The Fetlar rules will be used for the Sutton Hoo tournament.

The 2009 and 2010 Fetlar champion Tim Millar will be on hand on Saturday to coach new players in the game. Two tournaments will take place on Sunday: the Junior and Senior English Championships. All the necessary equipment will be provided. The tournament has no entry fee, but the National Trust charges for entry to the site.

UPDATE: The winner of the championship was Pete Jennings.
