Hnefatafl: the Game of the Vikings

Results of the English National Hnefatafl Championship

Friday, 15th August 2014

The English National Hnefatafl Championship for 2014 was held at Sutton Hoo on 9th and 10th of August. This was the second such tournament, and was a great success. The event was won by Tim Bullen of Formby. Last year's winner Pete Jennings was the runner up.

This year's winner Tim Bullen is one of a group of hnefatafl enthusiasts from the town of Formby, in North-west England. The activities in Formby are keenly advertised by Tony Higginson of Formby Books, and include regular hnefatafl nights, the devising of a local set of rules, and the design of a hnefatafl-inspired game called Nuts.

The championship was first organised in 2013 by Ealdfaeder, an Anglo-Saxon period re-enactment group, and has been umpired by Tim Millar, twice winner of the famous Fetlar championsip. It coincides with an annual festival of activity at Sutton Hoo over the weekend. The Fetlar rules have been adopted for the first two years, but plans for next year include use of the Copenhagen rules, with the Fetlar rules perhaps to be retained for the junior tournament.

Damian, I have the record of moves for the second game in the final; I will send it if you're interested ;) thanks Tim

That would be great, thanks Tim! I've always wanted to see a recorded game from one of these tournaments.
