This is the smart, no-nonsense approach to hnefatafl. With 37 pieces on an 11x11 board, it's suitable for playing many versions of hnefatafl, old and new. But it doesn't cost the earth.
The board is hand-made from beech plywood, coated with a cellulose finish and beeswax polish to give it the same smooth, glassy surface as the other boards available here in The Hnefatafl Shop. The board measures 10 inches square (250mm), and has eleven rows of eleven 0.75-inch (19mm) squares.
The board has a simple design: just the centre square and the four corners are specially marked, making it easy to play using a variety of starting layouts. The pieces are glass pebbles: a black king with his twelve blood-red defenders face 24 icy-white attackers. They are kept in a black drawstring pouch.
The booklet included with the game gives the history of hnefatafl in brief. It contains the rules for two different versions of hnefatafl. The first is based on Robert ap Ifan's tawlbwrdd. The second is based on the popular set of rules developed in Fetlar for their annual tournament, used in many other tournaments around the world.
The game comes with the same after-sales service you expect from The Hnefatafl Shop. Before and after the sale, you'll find here a passion for the game: strategic tips and alternative rules for the board on the web site, and a readiness to answer any questions about history, rules and strategy that you may have.
This game is hand-made in a rustic style. Please do not expect machine-made precision; there may therefore be minor blemishes in the work. Not suitable for young children due to small pieces.
