The Ealdfaeder re-enactment group, who organise the English National Hnefatafl Championships held at Sutton Hoo, have their own version of hnefatafl. Though they have adopted the more widespread Fetlar rules for the championship itself, their own version of the game is of some interest.

Played on a 9x9 board, Ealdfaeder Taefl has a king and eight defenders pitted against sixteen attackers. The defenders are, unusually, arranged in a square, as in the single-step hnefatafl I recently posted about. But this isn't a single-step game: pieces move as far as they like along a row or column.

The rules have been available on this site for some time, as a web page and as a print-and-play file. But as I'm expanding the leaflet collection, I've added a leaflet for Ealdfaeder Taefl too. You can find a link to it elsewhere on this page.
